The primary objective of all disciplines will be to foster critical thinking, problem solving, and deep understanding (FCPS Goal 1)
Students in FCPS are required to successfully complete the following Social Studies courses:  Government, Modern World History, American Studies II: Reconstruction to the Present.  Starting with the class of 2009, all students must pass the High School Assessment (HSA) in Government.
The Social Studies department offers a number of elective courses including: AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Political Science, AP Psychology, Sociology, and Psychology.  Other electives are offered as enrollment demands. 
Social Studies department members are very active in the extra and co-curricular programs of FHS.  They advise clubs such as:  Student Government, It's Academic, Connections!, Mock Trial, National History Day, Model UN, Chess Club, and Fed Challenge.
